INTEGRATED WETLAND TECHNOLOGY (IWT-IIT BOMBAY IP) BASED GREEN STP
Existing conventional STPs require extensive operation and maintenance and hence most of the
installed STPs are in defunct state. Integrated Wetland Technology (IWT), developed at IIT BOMBAY,
is an innovative natural treatment system for treatment of sewage naturally. IWT is a STP which uses
principles of settling, digestion and passive filtration in conjunction with constructed wetland
treatment, to yield high treatment efficiency with minimal operation and maintenance.
The IWT is an easy-to-install modular STP. The IWT system has been proved successful in efficient
working at different installation locations and meets the discharge standards set by CPCB. Final
treated water is reused by the clients for secondary purposes such as irrigation, gardening, and toilet
flushing.
Features of IWT
❖ Sludge generated in the system is recirculated, thereby reducing sludge handling frequency
❖ Sludge digestion rate is high in the in the innovative primary unit
❖ Sludge Management unit is place in the secondary unit to avoid any chocking and to maintain
solid retention time
❖ Decentralized approach is adopted
❖ Subsurface flow leads to odor free environment and ensure no effect on the efficiency on the
treatment unit due to extreme weather condition
❖ Very minimal electricity requirement
❖ Chemical free treatment
❖ Aesthetically appealing
❖ Minimal operation and maintenance
❖ 90% space can be reutilized.
Areas of application
The IWT based treatment is installed at and is suitable for the following areas:
❖ Rural and Urban area
❖ Villages, municipal bodies
❖ Community places (educational, spiritual and others)
